Origins of the name 'Bidmead' believe to be from or lived by the Water meadow or
Bitter water meadow.
Other known variations in spelling are 'Bidmead', 'Bidmeade', 'Bidmeed', 'Bidmeat',
'Bitmead', 'Bitmeat', 'Bigmead'.
There seems to be several groups of Bidmead families around 1800’s Coventry,
Glostershire, 3 in general London area, America, Australia and New Zealand.
Rumour is:-
- That the family is Quaker in origin.
- That there is a connection to the 1600’s pirate Black beard (Sir Henry Morgan).
- That one James Bidmeed was in the American civil war union soldiers roll of honour.
- That one Herbert Bidmead was a wrestler using the name Herbie Lawson.
- That one Edward Bidmead was in the American 1890 veteran’s schedules.
- That one Perceival Edward Bidmead from London (a personal friend of the grandfather of
the Sultan of Brunei (1994)) was taken prisoner in Bornio by the Japanese and died in
Kuching Prison Camp. His brother James died in America in his 80’s.
